THIS POSITION:


ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVE:

To supervise and carry out propagation works in council’s community nursery to
supply native plants for various bushland programs. To carry out bush regeneration
in bushland reserves as assigned by the Bushcare Coordinator in an effective and
efficient manner in accordance with specified standards and timetables as well as
supervise the operations of Council’s plant nursery.

POSITION DESCRIPTION COVERAGE:

This Position Description is not a complete statement of all the Accountabilities,
Responsibilities, Tasks and Outcomes etc. associated with the role. It is intended

undertake any and all tasks requested that are within their skills, competence and
training.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Undertake nursery production and propagagation using best practice techniques;

2. Supervise volunteers and students and liaise with residents and others regarding
day to day bushland issues, including public relations and other educational
issues, also to supervise volunteer programs for the community nursery;


3. Prepare annual work plans, annual reports describing works completed, and

update weed maps and flora and fauna inventories;

4. Remove weeds from bushland reserves in such a manner to optimise natural

regeneration of indigenous species;

5. Undertake supplementary planting and landscaping in appropriate areas using

suitable indigenous species, and participate in the production of these plants;


6. Responsible for the everyday running of the Lane Cove Community Plant

Nursery;

7. Collating and implementing the nursery production program in assistance with the

Bushcare Coordinator and Bushland Manager;

1. Ensure safe work practices are adopted in the work area, prevent injuries and

incidents and contribute to the development and maintenance of work method
statements, ensuring your actions contribute to a safe and healthy workplace;

2. Report injuries, accidents, incidents and near misses in the work area and on the
corrective actions taken to prevent reoccurrence;


3. Use and properly maintain appropriate safety clothing and personal protective

equipment;

4. Ensure EEO, the principles for a culturally diverse society, and Council policies
are complied with at all times;

5. Contribute to improved customer service and organisational effectiveness, by
acting ethically, with honesty and fairness;

6. Provide exceptional customer service by listening to the needs of each customer
and action in a prompt, professional and courteous manner at all times;

7. Ensure that the following principles from Council's Code of Conduct are taken
into consideration in the carrying out of all Council duties:- integrity, leadership,
selflessness, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and respect;

KEY RESULT AREAS:

1. Organise and supervise nursery volunteers and workshops;

2. Collect, process and clean viable seeds from indigenous species for propagation;

3. Ensure seed bank is stocked;

4. Ensure low mortality rates of propagated plants;

5. Provide a diverse selection of ground covers, shrubs and canopy plants;

6. Ensure sufficient outgoing stock is in place to keep with increasing demand;

7. Preparation of work plans, reports and statistics;

8. Provide on ground support in the field as directed by Team Leader Bushland

Operations. Maintain existing bush tracks and drains and construct new ones as
directed;


9. Maintain tools/materials, keep them well stocked and cleaned, regularly update

tool inventory;

10. Assemble plant orders for bushland programs and events;

11. Demonstrate a sound understanding of the various issues affecting bushland and

the natural environment in an urban context;

12. Identify and maintain local indigenous vegetation communities, plant species and

habitats within the assigned bushland reserve;

13. Identify and remove weeds from bushland reserves to optimise natural

regeneration of indigenous species

SELECTION CRITERIA:

ESSENTIAL

1. Appropriate qualifications in Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources,
Horticultural Science or equivalent;

2. Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills;

3. Demonstrated supervisor and staff management skills;

4. Demonstrated knowledge and experience of bush regeneration techniques.

5. Strong team player, good interpersonal skills and the ability to work
independently.

6. Experience in Nursery Operations;

7. Appropriate knowledge of Local Government and Environmental
Legislation;

8. Experience in Budget preparation and administration;

9. Class C Drivers Licence.


DESIRABLE

Bush regeneration techniques

Computer literacy with Microsoft Office applications and data base systems.

Physically fit to carry out laborious work in the field.

Total catchment management

Preparing and giving evidence in relevant Open Space legal matters
